A property manager that builds its own software.
Chalet Labs, Inc. was founded in 2016 and came out of the first Expa Labs cohort in San Francisco. The premise was simple: property management is a coordination problem, and coordination problems are what software is for.
Why we started
Property management has always been run on behalf of someone who is not in the room. That distance is where the problems live: the owner cannot see the property, the resident cannot get an answer, and the person in the middle is working from three records that disagree.
We thought the fix was to build the record properly — one platform, used by owners, residents, applicants and the management team at the same time. Everything else follows from that.
What we do
We run full-service residential property management, and we build the software it runs on. Management is local: we work in Sacramento, California. The platform is ours — web and mobile, for both sides of the lease.
That combination is the point. A management company buying off-the-shelf software ends up adapting its process to the tool. Building the tool means the process is the design.

Chalet is founded, working on a new approach to residential property management.
June 2016
Expa Labs, first session
Selected for the inaugural Expa Labs cohort in San Francisco, which began on 6 June 2016 and provided seed funding and workspace at the Expa studio.
July 2016
Announced
Expa publicly names Chalet as part of the first cohort, describing it as "a new take on property management that owners and renters love".
2017
Managing in Sacramento
The management operation scales in Sacramento, California, reaching over 80 to 100 residential units under management by the end of 2017.
